Neutral Earthing Transformers

Engineered Grounding Systems

High-Integrity Earthing & Grounding Solutions Up to 33 kV

Urja Techniques (India) Pvt. Ltd. is an internationally acknowledged manufacturer and exporter of heavy-duty Neutral Earthing Transformers (NET), also widely designated in international utility networks as Grounding Transformers. Operating from our advanced, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 certified manufacturing plant in Navi Mumbai, India, our seasoned technocrats engineer robust grounding solutions compliant with IEC 60076-6, IEEE C57.32, IS 3151, and ANSI standards.

In delta-connected or ungrounded three-phase high-voltage and medium-voltage networks, establishing an artificial neutral reference is critical to system safety and stability. Without a grounded neutral, single phase-to-ground faults induce hazardous overvoltages up to 173% of normal line-to-neutral levels across healthy phases, triggering severe insulation degradation, arcing ground hazards, and catastrophic equipment failures. URJA grounding transformers provide a controlled, zero-sequence path to detect, limit, and isolate earth faults swiftly.

Working Principle: Zig-Zag (Zn) Connection

The predominant and most economical design for grounding transformers is the Zig-Zag (Interstar) configuration. In a zig-zag connected unit, each core limb carries two interconnected winding sections wound in opposite directions from two alternate phases.

Under balanced continuous operations, equal currents flow through both windings on the core limb in opposing directions. The magnetic fluxes generated in each limb cancel each other out, presenting an exceptionally high magnetizing impedance. Consequently, the transformer draws negligible magnetizing current from the grid, operating with minimal no-load losses.

When an asymmetric phase-to-ground fault arises on the transmission or distribution line, zero-sequence fault currents enter the neutral terminal and divide identically among all three phases. Because the currents on each core leg flow in identical instantaneous directions through matched opposed windings, the zero-sequence impedance remains remarkably low. This controlled path allows protective earth-fault relays to accurately identify the fault and trip associated circuit breakers within milliseconds.

Transient Overvoltage Suppression

Permanently clamps phase voltages to ground during single-phase faults, preventing hazardous line-to-line stress across generators, cables, and switchgear.

Zero-Sequence Fault Path

Engineered zero-sequence impedance provides a calibrated return path for fault currents, enabling selective ground-fault relay coordination.

Auxiliary Power Integration

Available with secondary star-connected auxiliary windings to supply substation auxiliary loads, battery chargers, lighting, and SCADA apparatus.

NGR / Resistor Compatibility

Fully dimensioned to coordinate with Neutral Grounding Resistors (NGR) or reactors to limit earth-fault currents to specified limits (e.g., 100A – 1000A).

Engineered Configurations & Thermal Withstand Durations

Unlike continuous-duty distribution transformers, earthing transformers are primarily rated according to their short-time current withstand capacity. URJA designs each unit to absorb and dissipate the massive electrodynamic and thermal stresses generated during ground-fault transients without exceeding dielectric limits.

1. Zig-Zag (Zn) Earthing Transformers

The three-phase, single-winding zig-zag design is the standard choice for pure grounding applications. It provides the highest mechanical rigidity against radial and axial short-circuit forces and offers the most compact footprint.

2. Zig-Zag with Auxiliary Secondary Winding (Znyn)

Combines a zig-zag primary grounding winding with a continuous-rated star (Wye) secondary winding. This dual-purpose configuration powers station auxiliary services (such as 415 V / 240 V local loads) while simultaneously serving as the primary neutral earth point, significantly saving substation yard footprint and capital expenditure.

3. Wye-Delta (Ynd) Grounding Transformers

Featuring a star-connected primary with an accessible neutral and a closed delta-connected secondary winding. The closed delta provides circulating ampere-turn balance for zero-sequence current flow while the neutral handles ground returns. URJA manufactures both liquid-filled (ONAN/KNAN) and cast resin dry-type (AN) executions.

Global Applications Across Renewable & Industrial Sectors

URJA neutral earthing transformers are extensively deployed across critical global infrastructures where delta ungrounded systems require robust neutral stabilization:

Utility Solar PV Farms Wind Power Substations Refineries & Petrochemicals Steel & Smelting Mills Underground Mining Networks Offshore & Marine Platforms Captive Thermal Power Plants Commercial Data Centers

In modern utility-scale solar PV and wind generation farms, step-up inverter duty transformers frequently feature ungrounded delta windings on the medium-voltage collector side (typically 33 kV). URJA grounding transformers provide the dedicated artificial neutral reference required by grid operators to suppress dangerous ferroresonance phenomena and ensure uninterrupted grid interconnection compliance.

Third-Party Verification & Rigorous Quality Control

Every earthing transformer fabricated at URJA undergoes exhaustive routine testing in our state-of-the-art laboratory in Navi Mumbai prior to export dispatch. Our testing regime includes measurement of winding resistance, measurement of zero-sequence impedance, separate source power-frequency voltage withstand tests, induced overvoltage tests, oil dielectric dissipation factor, and full insulation resistance checks.

URJA transformers are fully type tested at nationally and internationally recognized third-party laboratories including CPRI (Central Power Research Institute) and ERDA (Electrical Research and Development Association) for dynamic short-circuit withstand capabilities and lightning impulse performance.
